Distinguished and Famous people from The Macleay Valley Coast
🏅 Amy Winters
Sprinter Amy Winters came through Kempsey schooling and Macleay District Little Athletics before becoming a leading Paralympic athlete. At Sydney in 2000, she won both the T46 100 and 200 metres. Her 200 metres victories extended across three consecutive Paralympic Games, from Atlanta to Athens. The school and junior club records establish the local foundations, while Paralympics Australia documents the international achievements. Her career adds a substantial athletics connection to the Macleay Valley, including the ordinary development through school sport that preceded racing on a world stage.
🎵 Amos Morris
Country singer Amos Morris is from Kempsey and has worked in the bush-ballad tradition, including collaboration with the Dusty family. In a firsthand interview, he spoke about winning Golden Guitars and the personal challenges of building a career as a gay performer with Aboriginal and Māori heritage. His local public appearances include opening the 2015 Freedom Ride anniversary concert at Kempsey Showground, alongside an event featuring Paul Kelly and Troy Cassar-Daley. The connection is an established hometown and continuing performance history, with his own account adding a personal dimension to the award list.
